Separate grant call: Special culture grant for independent operators in the field of dance

The City of Helsinki, Arts Promotion Centre Finland and the University of the Arts Helsinki have launched a pilot project to promote the skill development and performance-related operations of established independent dance communities at Dance House Helsinki. The Culture and Library Sub-committee of the City of Helsinki Culture and Leisure Committee made a decision on the project at its meeting on 26 August 2021. The City of Helsinki and Arts Promotion Centre Finland will fund the operators’ projects with EUR 100,000 each. The application period was from 4 October to 22 October 2021. The Culture and Library Sub-committee made a decision on the grants on 23 November 2021. The grants must be used by 31 December 2023. The reporting deadline is 31 March 2024. Reporting instructions will be given later.

Targeted grant for independent operators in the field of dance

Application period: 4–22 October 2021. The application period will end on the last day of the application period at 16.00.

The targeted grants are intended for dance groups that receive an operational grant from the City of Helsinki and Arts Promotion Centre Finland and wish to produce performances at Dance House Helsinki, develop their activities and promote internationalisation. The grants are part of a joint project of the City of Helsinki, Arts Promotion Centre Finland and Dance House Helsinki.

An applicant organisation may only submit one application for this targeted grant.

The City of Helsinki Culture and Leisure Division requires applicants to study the application notice and instructions carefully before applying for the grant.

Assessment criteria

Only the following criteria will be used for the comparison of applications in this call for applications.

The grant is a one-off project grant intended for a performance and development project at Dance House Helsinki to be implemented in 2022–2023. A grant may be awarded if the grant is deemed necessary taking into account other public aid received by the applicant and an assessment of the project. The grants are discretionary. The minimum sum to be awarded is EUR 5,000. Grants are not awarded to cover the costs of the group’s regular basic activities, and the funds must be earmarked for the applied project.

Grants will be awarded based on an assessment and comparison of the applications, as well as an overall assessment.

The following specific criteria will be used in the assessment of the applications:

The group must receive an operational grant from the City of Helsinki and Arts Promotion Centre Finland.

  • The project must be a performance project for Dance House Helsinki. It can be either a finished work or a new work or production.
  • The project must include objectives for developing the group’s own operations, such as boosting internationalisation or strengthening the profits from the group’s operations.
  • The group must not have had any previous opportunity to carry out any significant development experiments.
  • A project plan and a budget must be attached to the application. The applicant may use the same attachments as in the application to Arts Promotion Centre Finland. These attachments must be attached to the application in the e-services under Other attachment (Muu liite).
  • The group must not have had any previous opportunity to carry out any significant development experiments.
  • The project must have been granted a targeted grant from Arts Promotion Centre Finland for a corresponding project.

The applications and the intended use of the grants are public information.

The grant recipients must be aware of and comply with the general grant application instructions of the City of Helsinki. The criteria for artistic and cultural grants will be applied to the assessment of applications. The grants are discretionary.

Applying for a grant

The grant is applied for through the City of Helsinki e-services. The grant must be applied for with an application for arts and culture grants. The grant type to be selected is project grant. A project plan and a budget must be attached to the application. Applications cannot be submitted by email. The applications and attachments will not be returned.

The grant must be applied for from both Arts Promotion Centre Finland and the City of Helsinki in this call for applications. Arts Promotion Centre Finland will make a decision on its share, and the City of Helsinki Culture and Library Sub-committee on the share of the City of Helsinki.

Late application

If an application is not submitted by the deadline, it will be regarded as late and rejected. The applications must be submitted through the City of Helsinki e-services by 16:00 on the closing date of the application period.

Decision

Specialists from the Cultural Services and Support partner unit and the Culture and Leisure Division will assess the applications, and a decision on the grants to be awarded will be made by the Culture and Library Sub-committee on 23 November 2021. Decisions will be public after the meeting. Applicants will be notified by post.

Payment and use of the grant

The full grant amount will be paid to the recipient as a single instalment in January 2022. The awarded grant may be used for expenses incurred in 2022 and 2023 until 31 December 2023. The recipient must submit a written report on the use of the grant at the end of the period of use. The reporting deadline is 31 March 2024. Reporting instructions will be given later.

The grants may only be used in accordance with the grant decision. The use of the grant must be monitored as a separate cost unit in accounting.
