Environmental affairs: General grant

The environmental affairs general grant supports activities that promote sustainable development, for example, through environmental and nature protection or environmental education.

The grants may be applied for by registered associations that have been in operation for at least one year.

Grants are awarded for activities that:

  • support and complement the tasks of environmental services in Helsinki, or
  • supplement the services provided by environmental services to Helsinki residents.

Grants can be awarded, for example, for environmental and nature protection, animal protection and environmental education. All tasks and services of environmental services are described in the Rules of Operations of the Urban Environment Division (pdf, in Finnish).

The Environment and Permits Sub-committee of the Urban Environment Committee decides on the allocation of the grants. The decision takes into account the purpose of the grant, the nature and scope of the association’s operations and whether the action is directed at Helsinki. When the applicant applies for, uses and submits reports regarding the grants, it must comply with the City of Helsinki’s general grant allocation guidelines (pdf, in Finnish).

Application

Each spring, you can apply for grants for the following year. The grant is applied for through an electronic service. The application must be submitted within the application period, but the attachments can still be supplemented after the application period.

In 2025, the application period will end at 16.00 on 30 April 2025.

Grant decisions will be made in the following year (March–April), and the applicants will be informed individually.

How to use the grant

The grant may only be used for the purpose for which it was granted. The grant may not be redistributed.

A report on the use of the grant must be attached to the application for the following year. The report must be filed even if you do not apply for the grant for the following year.

Environmental affairs, general grant application

Organisations whose activities support and complement the activities and services of the Urban Environment Committee's Environment and Permits Sub-committee and the Urban Environment Division's environmental services to Helsinki residents may apply for a grant for their operations.

How the process works

General grants can be applied for by registered organisations that have been active for at least a year and whose activities are aimed at Helsinki residents.
Applications for budget grants must be submitted by the end of April of the preceding year. The exact submission deadline is indicated annually in a joint public notice of the city.

1. Decisions on environmental affairs grants are made by the Urban Environment Committee's Environment and Permits sub-committee.
2. Applicants will be informed of decisions by email.
3. Grants awarded will be paid to the applicant organisation's bank account.
4. A report of the use of the grant must be provided when submitting the application for the following year. Even if the grant is not applied for the next year, a report must still be provided. In this case, the report can be submitted using the messaging feature.

Validity period

An application submitted by the deadline will remain valid until a decision has been taken. A new application for the same purpose will replace the old application if it is sent before the deadline.

Additional information

A grant may only be used for the purpose it was awarded for and cannot be awarded onwards.
