Application period for grants from the remaining appropriation for sports grants for 2023 is open between 4th of September and 24th of September
The Sports Sub-committee of the City of Helsinki Culture and Leisure Committee decided on the eligibility criteria as well as application method and period for the remaining 2023 appropriation at its meeting on 29 August 2023. The grants will be targeted at sports clubs in Helsinki whose financial situation remains challenging because of the COVID‑19 pandemic or whose operational preconditions were significantly impacted by the restrictions and changes carried out at sports facilities.

Grants for sports in 2023
The Sport Sub-committee made decisions on operating grants, sports facility usage grants and other grants for associations promoting physical activity at its meeting on 13 April 2023. In 2023, a total of 321 sports clubs and associations for pensioners, special needs groups and other associations promoting physical activity received these grants.

The Sport Sub-committee made a decision on the grant eligibility criteria for 2023 at its meeting on 6 October 2022. When the City Council has reached a decision on the budget for 2023, the Sport Sub-committee will make a decision on splitting the grant appropriations between the different types of grants at its first meeting in 2023.

On 13 April 2023, the Sport Sub-committee made a decision on grants for 2023 to promote sports and physical activity for the elderly
At its meeting on 13 April 2023, the Sport Sub-committee decided on the grants to promote sports and physical activity for the elderly that were open for applications in January and February. A total of 25 project proposals were selected for funding, 16 of which were multiannual projects already funded by the Social Services and Health Care Division in previous years. The Culture and Library Sub-committee also decided on the grants for the promotion of cultural activities for the elderly at its meeting on 18 April 2023.

In its budget for 2023, the City of Helsinki has allocated EUR 2 million from escheats to the Culture and Leisure Division for grants to improve the wellbeing and functional capacity of the elderly by increasing their opportunities to participate in physical and cultural activities. EUR 700,000 has been earmarked for physical activity grants, and the distribution of the grants will be decided by the Sport Sub-committee in the spring of 2023.

Reports on the use of grants for promoting physical activity of children and young people in Helsinki (2022) must be submitted by 31 May 2024

On 8 December 2022, the Sport Sub-committee decided on the projects to receive grants to promote the physical activity of children and the young in Helsinki
The grant, which was open for application in October (from 13 to 31 October 2022), was targeted at measures or activities for children and young people aged between 10 and 20 years that
- promote the participation of girls in sports clubs and associations and increase the number of girls taking part in sports or prevent them from dropping out at an early age (drop out)
or
- promote the sports activities of children and young people included in gender minorities and lower the threshold for them to participate in activities provided by sports clubs and associations.
